Dublin is Ireland’s most popular port for cruise liners. In 2012 Dublin Port catered for 89 cruise ships. This increased to 100 cruise ships visiting the port in 2013. In 2014 Cruise liners carrying over 135,000 passengers and crew to Ireland’s capital city generated a major economic boost of €50 million during 2014. 2015 will see Dublin Port making history when the largest ship to visit our city is set to arrive into port stern first, in other words the 333m long MSC Splendida will have to reverse into her berth at Ocean Pier 33 in May.
At present it is estimated that passengers from these cruise ships contribute up to €50,000,000 to the local economy and the cruise ship business generates €1,000,000 for Dublin Port Company. The view among the cruise industry is that Dublin has the potential to become a turnaround port (where cruises start and finish) as well as a port of call (one day visits).
Dublin Port Company plan to redevelop the Alexandra Basin to include two berths for cruise ships of up to 340m in length which will accommodate ships that are significantly larger than the current maximum length 0f 300m. Dublin Port Company Masterplan can be viewed by clicking on this link.
